It looks like the coming year will be a journey back to in-person events. Not everybody working at trade shows and conferences will want to sit in the jetstream of people passing by.

We talked to a business that wants to keep their employees at the back of the booth – 6 feet from visitors – yet be a friendly presence as opposed to having an unmanned booth space.

They had ideas about using video screens and audio to deliver the messaging, rather than trying to yell through masks, but they also wanted to be sure the flow of air would be channeled away from their personnel.

We discussed having clear, Lucite signage in the booth table that would double as airflow disruptors. These barricades wouldn’t block air passage completely, but they would be a bit like the sneeze guards at the salad bar — a good general barrier that still allows for access and functionality.

Finally, they wanted something affordable, in case they decided that in-person shows were not right for them quite yet.

That meant that we set aside some of the more elaborate ideas and just stuck with smart design and fabrication. We may affix unobtrusive permanent labels with contact information and assembly instructions so the pieces can be mixed and matched, moved, dismantled, or shipped.

It’s a good solution. I’ve found over my years in specialty screen printing that the best ideas are the ideas that serve the needs of the moment.

We don’t need 100 ideas, just one good one that gets the job done. In this case, it is an experiment that has yet to be tested, and we’ll go from there. The great thing about screen printing is that we can always print on the panels later. It’s a modular process, so we can even print something simple at first and add color, materials, and complexity later.

For businesses that like to work through this type of process and “think out loud,” it’s challenging yet fun to create something that solves a specific problem in just the right way. I’ve had decades of experience in designing and printing within the constraints of an unusual requirement or hard-to-find materials. Working within a set of challenges is something I enjoy about my work.

If you have an idea I might be able to help with, please reach out. I have lots of examples of my work on this site, and there are lists of many customers I have helped. I’m happy to help you!
